What we know

James H. Shumate came in 1873, built 'a log room, 14x16', where he lived for a year, and for five years supplied the hotel at Manitou with butter. In 1879 he started 'a store at what is now Husted', sold $70,000 of goods in the summers of 1881 and 1882 and was postmaster for six years; in 1899 he was clerk and trustee of the Husted Baptist Church (PBR 1899, S-0192, pp. 658-662). McGrath's The Real Pioneers of Colorado (1934) says he accumulated 1,400 acres near Husted (S-0200).
