Places, by tier in TOWNS.md
How sure the point is
USGS GNIS point for the place itself
Stand-in: the GNIS school, cemetery or store of that name
Approximate: Wikipedia's coordinates or the center of a cited survey section; exact site still to be fixed
Built 2026-10-05 from towns/TOWNS.md and data/places-master.tsv by scripts/build_research_map.py. Places: USGS GNIS (2021) unless marked. Roads, railroads and creeks: OpenStreetMap, as of October 2026, so the roads are today's, and the abandoned grades are only the ones OSM volunteers have mapped. County lines: U.S. Census TIGER. Zone lines are the sorting lines from TOWNS.md, not the crest of the divide. The old maps are the USGS 30-minute sheets of 1889–1894 (Castle Rock 1894, Colorado Springs 1893, Big Springs 1893, Limon 1892, Sanborn 1893, Platte Canyon 1893, Pikes Peak 1894) from the USGS Historical Topographic Map Collection, warped from their NAD27 polyconic grids by scripts/build_topo_overlay.py; where they disagree with today's lines by a few hundred feet, the 1890s survey is the likelier cause.
