What we know

'The large mountain west of Monument over-shadowing Monument Lake,' named for Herman Schwanbeck, a German pioneer who homesteaded just east of town (Lavelett, S-0011, p. 7). The Mt. Herman Planting Station of 1907, the start of the Monument Nursery, took its name. A fringe place, just outside the Divide outline.
