What we know

Founded 1907 as the Mt. Herman Planting Station: Walter Schrader spaded its first seed bed that year (Lavelett, S-0011 p. 92, and a CRN post; a 2007 PLHS newsletter says 1904). It grew trees to replant the 15,000 acres burned in the Mt. Herman fire of the 1880s and later for shelterbelts; a CCC camp from 1933; closed in 1965 and moved to Basalt (Lavelett pp. 92-94).
