Mines and quarriesHistoric or vanishedDouglas County

What we know

A wildcat oil well begun in September 1955 by independent operators led by F. G. Holl, a Wichita geologist, on land of the Greenland Land and Cattle Co. (Douglas County News, Sept. 8, 1955, S-0142). Whether it found anything is not yet known.

Where it was

'In the center of the southeast quarter, northeast quarter of Section 17, Township 10 south, Range 66 west' (Douglas County News, Sept. 8, 1955, S-0142); placed at the center of that quarter-quarter from the BLM PLSS (CadNSDI). Good to a few hundred feet.

Placed from a written description, such as a land section, a distance from a landmark or an old survey note.
