What we know
Black Forest ranch at 13985 Vollmer Road with a log cabin, barn and stables photographed in the 1976 county survey (photo B18); Judy von Ahlefeldt's maps label the 'K.K. Ranch' here. It was the headquarters of the 6,000-acre KK Ranch, assembled by the Kountze brothers in the 1880s and run by the Kirk twins; the house and barns date from the early 1890s. An 1894 dam on West Kiowa Creek made a 17-acre lake for Eastonville picnics; it failed in the 1935 flood and sent water through Elbert. The ranch kept a commissary for timber workers (Ellett p. 7). Later it was the Hock family's 'Tannenbaum' (from 1936) and the Win-Del ranch (1945-50) (von Ahlefeldt pp. 72, 90, 93).
