## What we know

On Aug. 4, 1864, Conrad Moschel and three other men left the California Ranch stockade to bring in George Engl's strayed cattle. About 30 Cheyenne and Arapaho attacked them; the men were separated, and Moschel's body was found six days later and buried here. A memorial was carved in the rock above the grave some years later (county map, S-0123, citing Appleby, Fading Past).

## Where it was

Pin on the Douglas County Historic Resource Map (DCHR-098; Douglas County and Douglas County Libraries, 2012, on the Larkspur Historical Society's Google map, S-0123). Where that map and ours place the same site, the pins mostly fall within about 300 feet. Good to a few hundred feet.

Placed from a written description, such as a land section, a distance from a landmark or an old survey note.
