## What we know

James H. Shumate came in 1873, built 'a log room, 14x16', where he lived for a year, and for five years supplied the hotel at Manitou with butter. In 1879 he started 'a store at what is now Husted', sold $70,000 of goods in the summers of 1881 and 1882 and was postmaster for six years; in 1899 he was clerk and trustee of the Husted Baptist Church (PBR 1899, S-0192, pp. 658-662). McGrath's The Real Pioneers of Colorado (1934) says he accumulated 1,400 acres near Husted (S-0200).

## Where it was

Shumate's homestead patent of Jan. 10, 1888: W1/2 NW and NE NW of Sec. 18, T12S R66W, and SE NE of Sec. 13, T12S R67W (BLM GLO, S-0080), the land around the range line that his 1899 sketch calls 'section 13, township 12, range 67 west' (PBR 1899, S-0192, p. 658); center of those tracts on the BLM PLSS grid. Good to about a quarter mile.

Placed from a written description, such as a land section, a distance from a landmark or an old survey note.
